Tumblestones are smaller chunks of natural or rough crystals and minerals which have been polished in a tumbler, a machine which rotates a barrel containing the crystals and different grades of grit rather like sand paper.

The process has to be repeated with finer grits to get that shiny polish we're all familiar with.

Some minerals like malachite and angelite are often polished by hand because they are fairly soft and could be damaged in a tumbler.
